Scented advent calendars 2017, part 1

With the usual apologies for holiday creep, I’m starting our yearly roundup of advent calendars now, since they tend to launch early and then sell out quickly. If you want one, buy it soon. Part 2 will be coming up later this month. (Please note that some of these calendars are not available in the US. Advent calendars are more popular in the UK than in the US).

Diptyque’s 2017 Advent is out at Selfridges: “Make this year’s countdown to Christmas the most special yet with the anticipated Advent Calendar from Diptyque. Housing 25 little treasures to discover before the big day, it brings together the label’s beloved products in a unique discovery format. Look forward to a selection of cute miniatures including 10ml Vinaigre de Toilette, deluxe 15ml skin and body care, mini-candles in 35g format and a 70g candle make every day a celebration.” £300. (Most years, this ends up in the US as well but sells out fast…)

Bunch o’ limited edition collector bottles 2017, part 11

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US. Today’s post includes solid perfume compacts and jewelry from Estee Lauder, collector bottles from Zadig et Voltaire, and a new collector case for Thierry Mugler Angel.

Monica Rich Kosann + Estee Lauder

From Estee Lauder’s latest collection of limited edition solid perfume compacts by luxury jewelry designer Monica Rich Kosann, the Beautiful Sea Goddess Perfume Compact. $250 at Neiman Marcus

11 Cheap Perfumes Beauty Outsiders Love

Prada Infusion d'Iris Absolue, Stash SJP and Donna Karan Gold adverts

Earlier this month, Marie Claire did a listicle on 10 Cheap Perfumes Beauty Insiders Love. I have no real objection to their list1 other than the inclusion of a $76 perfume and an $82 body oil — beauty insiders apparently have a different definition of “cheap” than I do, possibly because they don’t have to fork over cash for their beauty products — but I did note on Twitter that I did not love any of their picks. I’ll also add that none of their 10 show up very often in our daily scent of the day polls. So, here is a list of my own. I couldn’t make myself narrow down to fewer than 11, and of course I’ve cheated even more by adding alternatives. As always, do include your own picks in the comments!

Marie Claire included the old standby 4711. I know some of you probably love 4711, and I can’t scoff at it — it’s possibly one of the better fragrances on their list. Still, my old-school drugstore choice would be the venerable spicy carnation, Old Spice

The Shifting Contexts of Perfume

Could other factors, apart from the aroma itself, influence our perception of perfume? Yes, of course, and this is not limited to fragrance. Elisa explores the topic. A few years ago, I went to a nearby wine shop to stock up for a weekend in the mountains with some old college friends. A representative from a […]

The daily lemming

Is it summer yet? My most-used Bronze Goddess product is actually not the spray fragrance, but the fantastic (and highly-scented) Whipped Body Creme, introduced in 2014. This year, they’ve added a Body Salt Scrub (“This luxurious scrub with mineral-rich salt crystals gently smooths and exfoliates for sensual, luminous skin. Decadent oils help soften and nourish […] Continue reading
